Maintaining of the Research Plantation in Vorzel, Ukraine
At two plantations established in Vorzel, Ukraine the Miscanthus-based system has been monitored multiyear. The research is focused on monitoring the pest populations and testing the impact of biochar to M×g biomass production.
On April 5, 2026 the insect monitoring was conducted to assess pest populations. Generally, grub monitoring was carried out using soil excavation methods in spring, when pests are located in the upper soil layers. The results showed that the population of grubs—serious soil-dwelling pests—exceeded the economic threshold. The appropriate soil treatment measures were applied to reduce the pest’s numbers and prevent crop’s damage. On the next day spraying by herbicide was conducted to eliminate overwintering weed stages, which will improve the growing conditions and reduce competition for crops during the development. These measures will contribute to effective pest and weed management ensuring proper growth of M×g at this pilot field during the vegetation period.
