Long-Term Monitoring of the Research Miscanthus Plantations in Vorzel, Kyiv Region, Ukraine
On June 28, 2026, as part of the long-term monitoring programme, a team from the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (NULES), led by Dr. Tatyana Stefanovska, visited and evaluated two M×g experimental plantations established on military-disturbed degraded sandy soils in Vorzel, Kyiv region, Ukraine in 2023 and 2024, consequently.
The 2023 experimental field, where Miscanthus × giganteus was cultivated with the commercial biochar Ideale applied at two rates (5% and 10%), has reached a mature stage of development, demonstrating the successful long-term establishment of the crop under degraded sandy soil conditions. The evaluation of soil microbial parameters and nematode communities revealed a positive trend in soil revitalization. These observations confirm the continued progress and effectiveness of the Advanced M×g Phytotechnology System.
The 2024 experimental field, where M×g was grown with two application rates of biochar produced from Miscanthus biomass within the framework of the project, demonstrated improved plant growth and biomass accumulation compared with 2025. This improvement may be attributed to intensified plantation management, more favourable weather conditions in 2026, including well-distributed rainfall and the absence of prolonged drought, as well as the successful establishment and further development of the plantation.
